Aspiring LGBTIQ professionals continue to face challenges in being their authentic selves.
Despite marriage equality and advances in LGBTIQ rights, LGBTIQ people in Australia still face significant challenges in being their authentic selves at work. This is particularly so for young LGBTIQ Australians. Research shows that only 28% of LGBTIQ people under 24 years old are out to everyone with whom they work, and this is even lower for LGBTIQ graduates and interns.
There is no other organisation like Out for Australia that’s solely focused on solving these challenges.
Out for Australia’s (OFA) vision is to create an Australia where every LGBTIQ student and aspiring
professional is confident to be their authentic self in the workplace. Our mission is to provide mentors,
visible role models, thought leadership and targeted support to aspiring LGBTIQ professionals and to
strengthen the sense of community among professionals and students.
We run Australia’s leading LGBTIQ professional mentoring program.
Our main offering is our mentoring program that pairs students (tertiary level i.e. TAFE or university) and young professionals with more established professionals. We also host regular events where we highlight role models, tackle key issues related to workplace inclusion and authenticity, provide professional
development training, and build a sense of community among professionals and students. We are also beginning to achieve these objectives through our online community.
We are only five years old but have achieved so much.
Starting as Out for Sydney in 2013, we launched as Out for Australia in 2015 and now have a presence in NSW, QLD, VIC, WA and ACT. In just 5 years, we have had over 2,000 LGBTIQ people participate in our
mentoring program, making it the largest LGBTIQ mentoring program in Australia. We have hosted 116 events with almost 10,000 attendees and 256 unique role models who have spoken at these events.
We partner with leading Australian businesses to promote inclusivity, together.
OFA has been integral in creating a national space for LGBTIQ people to develop the skills and confidence they need to be their authentic selves in workplaces around Australia, as well as partnering with workplaces to help them be more inclusive. Our current partners include Baker McKenzie, BCG, Star Observer, IAG, PwC, Clayton Utz, TAL, J.P. Morgan, Accenture, CBRE and Deloitte.
We can’t thank you enough!
We would like to thank each and every mentor, mentee, partner, volunteer, community organisation, donor, event speaker and attendee for your support. We have bold plans for 2019, and won’t stop until every aspiring LGBTIQ professional is confident to be their authentic self in workplaces around Australia. Your help will get us there
